16 July 2017: [Talk] Raising Positive Child with Brain-in-Mind

SK Tan sharing ways to guide and nurture a child positively

An illuminating talk entitled “Raising Positive Child with Brain-in-Mind” was delivered by SK Tan on 16 July 2017 at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), Kampar campus. The talk was jointly organised by the Malaysia Mental Literacy Movement, UTAR and Tunku Abdul Rahman University College in conjunction with the 13th Malaysia Festival of the Mind. The talk focused on the concepts and approaches to bring up a positive child. According to SK Tan, nurturing children with a positive mindset will help them to achieve great heights in their lives and help them grow into a confident person. He stressed that parents play the most important role in children’s life. Surprisingly, he encouraged parents to allow their children to watch television programmes. However, at the end of the day, parents should always ask them, “What have you learnt?” and “Was it good or bad?” This can help the children to analyse what they have watched and learnt from it, and also help them to differentiate between good and bad. Other than that, majority of the children as well as youngsters tend to say “I don’t know” whenever a question is posed. “Parents should never allow their children to say that. Children should be aware of what is happening around them so that they would be able to answer questions,” he stressed. He further explained that parents should never restrict their children’s imagination; instead they should foster creativity and allow their children to imagine. He then quoted, “When you put in the right effort, you will get the right reward.” He added that time is a scarce resource and that parents must utilize the time wisely to educate their children. He also stated that the most difficult job to do in the world is to think and the toughest thing to do in life is to be happy. As individuals, one should strive to attain these best things in life.

SK Tan posing questions to the audience

SK Tan further elaborated that parents should trigger their children to be positive as the choice comes from parents and also the environment. Children should be constantly motivated when doing something even though it is the littlest things as this inspires them to do better in everything they perform. Furthermore, parents should instigate the power of the subconscious mind in their children so that it can drive them to attain their goal. He also shared the importance of words used by parents on their children. He highlighted that parents should always use positive words with their children and try not to say negative words that might demotivate them. “Positive words would help them do better in everything,” he justified. Children always set their parents as an example and often follow most of the things that parents say or do. To demonstrate, he showed a video of parents that displayed disrespectful behaviours in public in the presence of their children who also emulated the action of their parents. In sum, this shows that parents can be so influential to children. SK Tan said, “If you think positively, you will attract positivity.” Since our brain capacity is very stagnant, SK Tan reminded that parents should educate their children since young and not when they are older. Parents should also allow them to discover their potentials in different areas and to follow their dreams.

WHAT IS BRAIN FRIENDLY LEARNING?

We are now in 21st century where we have to realize that the world is evolving at rapid pace so fast that most of us have challenges to cope with the knowledge or skills that we need to acquire.

Hence, it is essential that we must learn new skills or technologies that help us to pick up information or knowledge effortlessly or we need to find ways to make our brain understand what we need to learn/know. Be prepared to be a Skilled Learner.

One of the good examples that I can demonstrate is about our memory. We can actually remember well with unlimited storage in our brain but most of us always have challenge to memorize.

Example, please do your best to memorize the following objects without using any tools like pen and paper:

1. Tree
2. Eyes
3. Triangle
4. Car
5. Glove
6. Gun
7. Rainbow
8. Octopus
9. Cat
10. Bowling Ball

and I bet most of us will fail to remember them especially if they are needed in sequence.

However, you can actually remember them all by using this approach:
Item 1 is Tree because the tree trunk looks like no 1
Item 2 is Eyes simple because we all (human) have 2 eyes
Item 3 is Triangle because it has 3 angles
Item 4 is Car as it has 4 tires
Item 5 is Glove as it is meant to be worn on 5 Fingers
Item 6 is Gun because and old gun can only shoot 6 bullets (6 shooters)
Item 7 is Rainbow, we know the Rainbow has 7 colors
Item 8 is Octopus because octopus always have 8 tentacles
Item 9 is Cat as there is a saying that cat has 9 lives
Item 10 is bowling ball because it is used to knock down 10 pins.

In order to recall these items, just ask the right questions like:
Item 10 is Bowling ball because it is used to knock down 10 pins.
Car is number 4 because of 4 tires
3 is Triangle because of 3 angles
6 is gun because of 6 bullets
and you can just carry on until you can remember all the 10 items in sequence.

I therefore would like to emphasize that we can make our learning simple and fun by:

  1. Copycat (psychology name is Modeling)
  2. Repetition (is the mother of learner)
  3. Association by connecting things that you do not know with what you already familiar.

When we learn new thing, it is always good to model or copycat from an expert who is the SME (subject matter expert). Subsequently keep practicing until it becomes automatically like Auto-Pilot mode inside your brain or becoming a habit. I would have to strongly emphasize that most of the humans that I know really know lots of stuffs especially from Internet like Google, Wikipedia, Youtube and unfortunately they don’t own it in their neuro-nerve (inside the brain).
Finally, always use the association method to connect the new skills with what you already familiar or know.

In conclusion, we all can learn effectively as long as we make our brain understand what we need to learn with ASSOCIATION. In addition, our brain is so powerful that our brain always remember when it is well trained.
